The O'Fallon Monument, Bear Creek Canyon

O'Fallon Park was one of the last of Denver's Mountain Parks to be acquired. In 1938, Martin J. O'Fallon donated the 860-acre property in Bear Creek Canyon to the City & County of Denver for "the use and pleasure of the people." This unusual quadrangular stone fireplace has been a familiar, if mysterious, landmark ever since. Not just a picnic structure, it also qualifies as a monument, thanks to the plaque mounted on its side above the north-facing firebox.

O'Fallon

The plaque on the monument reads:

THIS MEMORIAL ERECTED AND
DEDICATED TO THE USE AND PLEASURE
OF THE PEOPLE

BY
MARTIN JOSEPH O'FALLON
A.D. 1939

BENJAMIN F. STAPLETON, MAYOR
OF THE
CITY AND COUNTY OF DENVER
COLORADO
